Kanye West is one of those rare celebrities who walks the fine line between being loved and hated by everybody. An entertainer of the highest caliber, Yeezy is the brains behind some of the biggest records of the past decade. As a fresh-faced young producer getting his start, Ye mixed Jay Z now legendary Blueprint at Roc-A-Fella Records and tracks likeIzzo (H.O.V.A.) which burned their way into the popular consciousness. Kanye went on to produce records for Nas, Talib Kweli, T.I., Ludacris and Scarface among others before setting out on his own.
His first album The College Dropout featuring Jesus Walks brought Kanye into the limelight as a solo artist in his own right, moving units and selling loads of Kanye West concert tickets. Kanye took the opportunity provided by his newfound fame to indulge his more artistic leanings, collaborating with composer John Brion on his follow-up, Late Registrationand the single Gold Digger. Afterward there was Kanye’s release date face-off with 50 Cent over his third album Graduation which featured the single Stronger and blew 50 out of the water, his mother’s death in 2007 and the release of his fourth album, 808s and Heartbreakand the single Love Lockdown.
With fame came a larger podium to speak from and memorable sound bites like “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” and his meltdown at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards where he first stormed the stage to make controversial statements, paving the way for his 2009 outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. Unlike most egomaniacs, Kanye’s neuroses make way for apologies blogged, tweeted or otherwise. Two of his prolific tweets were finalists for MTV’s 2011 Tweet of the Year honors (“I hate when I'm on a flight and I wake up with a water bottle next to me like oh great now I gotta be responsible for this water bottle” and “dating models I had to learn to like small dogs and cigarettes”). Not above self-deprecation, Kanye’s Spike Jonze directed video forWe Were Once a Fairytale depicts Kanye wasted at a nightclub getting man-slapped by Spike Jonze. Despite his shortcomings, Kanye delivers. His 2011 release My Dark Twisted Fantasy featured club bangers Turn Out the Lights, Power and Monster and fans with Kanye West tickets to his Coachella set quite possibly witnessed one of the best hip hop sets of all time.
