Plot Synopsis:

Once upon a time, there is a young ogre named Shrek. On his seventh birthday, his parents decide it is time for him to grow up and make a life for himself...so they kick him out. He soon learns that the outside world can be cruel, and it seems everyone hates him for his monstrous appearance. So he resigns himself to live bitterly alone in a swamp. But one day, his swamp becomes overrun with an assortment of storybook characters (Pinocchio, the three little pigs, etc...). The evil Lord Farquaad has evicted them from their homes in his attempt to create a pure kingdom, free of "fairy tale freaks." Shrek takes it upon himself to straighten this Lord Farquaad out so that he can get back to his peace and quiet. On the way, he rescues a spunky and talkative Donkey from being captured, and he insists on joining Shrek on his journey.

Meanwhile, Lord Farquaad is desperate to marry a princess and become King of Duloc. He learns that the beautiful Princess Fiona is trapped in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. When Shrek arrives, Farquaad decides his stature makes him the perfect one to rescue the princess, and his reward will be the deed to his swamp. Shrek begrudgingly accepts the task, and soon finds himself at a dark and scary castle. While Donkey distracts the Dragon, whose rage subsides when Donkey inadvertently woos her, Shrek climbs to the highest room in the tallest tower and discovers the waiting princess. It turns out that due to years and years of patient waiting, Fiona has developed a desperate desire to have her fairy-tale rescue go just the way it does in the storybooks, but Shrek is no Prince Charming, and he is forced to carry her away. Fiona is dissatisfied with her unconventional rescuer, but Shrek and Fiona soon find that they have more in common than they thought.
